Flooded. As seen on TV!

A few weeks ago I spent some time looking at one Calgary neighbourhood that was underwater during June's floods, and I was really surprised at how high the water level got to-even hundreds of metres away from the river. It was very surreal to walk among vacant, boarded up apartment complexes-quite like an episode of TheWalking Dead.

UPDATE | Knowledge Network's Shorts Competition

I'm currently two days away from pitching my short film project to the Knowledge Network and have been hard at work this last month researching and gathering information pertaining to my project.

In the mound of information I came across 93 year old "Buddy" Devito of Fruitvale, B.C., whom I interviewed and photographed for the preliminary part of my project. Mr. Devito has a story to tell and I hope to be the one to help tell it. Stay tuned.

Knowledge Network's Shorts Competition - Nelson Edition

I just got word that I am one of fifteen image makers who will be competing for a $30,000 contract offered by the Knowledge Network (KN). The KN, B.C.'s Public Broadcaster, is looking for ten 2-3 minute short films created from still imagery that will historically present the Nelson and wider Kootenay region. Whether I sink or swim at the pitch session in June I'll be sure to write a follow up here soon.

(UPDATE 08/08/2013. Well I didn't walk away with the $30,000 contract this time, but I did learn a tonne about pitching a project to a television network. A truly gruelling and educational weekend. Thanks to all the filmmakers and network folks that were involved. And a big congratulations to winner Amy Bohigan of Watershed Productions.)

India Within: A short skate film by Brent Novak

I love when I find action sports videos that are about so much more than the "action" or the "sports". For me it's often about the environment and the in-between moments that make a photograph, film, or otherwise. India Within, by filmmaker Brett Novak, balances these aspects nicely and showcases some creative skating by Kilian Martin in an unlikely environment. More of Brett Novak's work can be found at www.brettnovak.com.

GENTEMSTICK Bowl Session, Whitewater, B.C.

Japan's Gentemstick snowsurfers and others turned out for a unique and exciting bowl session at Whitewater Resort this past weekend. A beautiful, sunny, spring day-almost beach worthy-complemented the session and definitely channeled Gentemstick founder Taro Tamai's idea that snow and surf are inexplicably linked.

Following up on this post from January, I wanted to give these gifts to my friends Anisa & Trevor to celebrate their new twin girls.

I AM THE 3% - City Panorama 2013

I just received a very nice email from the Director of Education at Seattle's Photo Centre Northwest letting me know that 3 of my 4 entries for the 2013 City Panorama contest have been accepted. Since the PCNW is only accepting 100 photos I feel very blessed that 3 out of their 100 choices are of my work. The initiative can be described as a public art project that brings artworks into bus shelters all across the USA (sorry Canada). The selected 100 images will be printed on 8' X 2' wooden panels and remain for up to 10 years. I'm excited to think where my images will end up. Here are my successful entries below. More news soon! Joy Ride | A short film shot entirely on the Nikon D800

It's about that time when I'm thinking of upgrading my camera gear. With the current client need for video it just makes sense to have a DSLR that can shoot both video and stills, and the Nikon D800 may be just the body for me. I've always loved film and am excited at the possibility of moving between the two mediums with one camera body and set of lenses. Check out this sample short film shot with a Nikon D800 and Nikkor lenses. The ending may surprise you.

Baldface Lodge | Nelson, B.C.

Although I've been riding the Kootenay pow for a lot of years, nothing compared to the snow quality that I found up at Baldface Lodge this past week. The home of the Red Bull Supernatural, Baldface has been blessed with hundreds of cms of snow so far this winter. This trip was their first tour of the season, and pristine lines were found at every turn. It may seem ironic that I don't include a single photo of snowboarding from a trip to one of the world's premier cat ski lodges, and that's because this trip was all pleasure and no business. You'll just have to fill in the blanks, but trust that there were some quality pow runs.

Big thanks to Jeff Pensiero, Guide/Powder-Tester Mark Karlstrom, Cat-Tamer Homey A, Faceplant Winter Ale for fueling the apres ski fun, and the rest of the Baldface staff and guests. You all made for a great trip. What a great way to round out 2012. Cat Two!!
